Software Architecture

I design the architecture of new software from scratch, or review an existing system that is struggling to grow and lay out its bottlenecks, technical debt and risks. The goal is a simple, solid foundation your team can keep building on comfortably for years.

What I Do

  • Business analysis and turning requirements into a technical design
  • Decisions between a monolith, a modular monolith and a service-based architecture
  • Technical review report for an existing codebase and infrastructure
  • Technology choices, roadmap and migration plan
  • Code review processes within the team and architecture documentation

Fixed-Scope Package

All packages

Architecture Review

An independent review that uncovers the bottlenecks, technical debt and risks of software that is struggling to grow.

  • Review of the codebase, module boundaries and dependencies
  • Assessment of data model, API and infrastructure decisions
  • Performance bottlenecks and scaling limits
  • Architecture interviews with the technical team

Deliverable: A prioritized risk list, a target architecture and a step-by-step migration plan

How I Work

  1. 1

    Discovery Call

We clarify together what will be reviewed, and for which decision.

  2. 2

    Access and Scope

I get read-only access to code, infrastructure and documents, and we confirm the scope in writing.

  3. 3

    Review

I review the system and talk to your technical team where needed.

  4. 4

    Report and Presentation

I present the prioritized findings and the plan in a written report.

  5. 5

    Support with Implementation

If you like, I put the recommendations into practice together with your team.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you work remotely?

Mostly, yes, and I work with clients in other countries and time zones. I am based in Mersin, Turkey (UTC+3); when the work requires it, we can also plan on-site meetings or working days.

How do you charge?

It depends on the type of work: a fixed project price for work with a clear scope (an architecture review, for example), a day rate for work whose scope will become clear over time (€600 per day (excl. VAT)), and a fixed monthly fee for ongoing work (such as a fractional software architect, a fractional CTO or maintenance). For a fractional architect or fractional CTO the fee is from €2,400 per month for 1 day a week (excl. VAT); for maintenance it is from €1,200 per month with 2 days included (excl. VAT); unused days do not roll over. Starting prices for the fixed-scope packages are listed on the packages page, in EUR and excluding VAT; I send the exact price in a written quote after our first call.

What are your payment terms?

Half of the fee is paid upfront when the work starts, and the other half on delivery.

Do you issue invoices?

Yes. Every piece of work is invoiced in EUR by my company in Turkey, SDR Bilişim Hizmetleri Dijital Yazılım E-Ticaret Danışmanlığı İthalat İhracat Limited Şirketi.

Do you sign a contract?

If you want one, yes: scope, delivery, fees and confidentiality are set out in a written contract. For work where you do not want a contract, the written quote and your approval apply.

Who owns the source code and the rights?

You do. Once payment is complete, the source code, the documentation and all rights to the software pass to you.

Will you sign a data processing agreement?

Yes. For work that requires me to access personal data, I sign a data processing agreement.

Will you sign a non-disclosure agreement (NDA)?

Yes. If you like, I can sign it before our first call, before we discuss any details of your project.

When can you start?

I can start a project with a clear scope within 1 week. We agree the exact date together on our first call.

Who works on my project?

I do, Umut Yerebakmaz, directly. I do not hand the work over to someone less experienced; you deal with the same person from the first call to delivery. For continuity I document every decision and technical detail and pass the knowledge on to your team, so the software does not depend on me.

Will you work with our existing software team?

Yes. As a fractional software architect I can work as part of your team: guiding architecture decisions, reviewing code, building the hard parts together and passing the knowledge on to the team. My aim is to strengthen your team, not to make it dependent on me.

What happens after the work is done?

I hand the software over to your team with its documentation, and run a knowledge transfer session that explains how the code and infrastructure work. If you like, we can continue with monthly support afterwards; I respond to support requests within 1 business day.
